Space Foundation introduces new virtual science lab
In October, the Space Foundation introduces "Asteroid Challenge, Target: Earth." Created in collaboration with SpaceClass, the virtual lab uses the excitement of space to teach students essential concepts of science and math. Students conduct virtual lab experiments to determine the trajectory of the real asteroid Apophis, now on a path that could bring it dangerously close to colliding with Earth in 2029, and how to divert it away from Earth's orbit, choosing from among such options as exploding it, attaching a solar sail to push it away, and using a gravitational tugboat method to pull it out of harm's way. The asteroid challenge features Space Foundation board member Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium in the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
Third grade teacher and Space Foundation Teacher Liaison Christi Marquardt will lead her class from Manitou Springs Elementary School in Colorado in the nationwide debut of this interactive science program Oct 4.
Vision Videogames joins Space Certification program
As part of its Space Certification program, the Space Foundation has recognized the SpaceStationSim video game from Vision Videogames as an official Space Imagination Product. SpaceStationSim puts the player in charge of creating the greatest engineering achievement in the modern world, the International Space Station. Now anyone can create and manage a living spaceship and crew. The game has the added distinction of being the first space station game developed in collaboration with NASA via a NASA Space Act Agreement.
