Titanic Accomplishments...and Failure

President & Chief Executive Officer

On Oct. 19, the last of the mighty Titan rockets lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It was a picture-perfect, flawless flight of the most powerful in the family, the awesome Titan IV. And it was the end of an era. Even the skies over Vandenberg seemed to sense it, eschewing their frequent overcast in favor of a glorious, sun-drenched morning. A crowd of VIPs seldom seen at Vandenberg gathered for the event. It was Titan launch number 200. And it was the 43rd consecutive successful launch by Air Force Space Command of a vital national security space payload – the longest string of consecutive successful launches in Air Force history.

Report from Washington

October saw little movement on the major policy issues the Space Foundation's D.C. office is tracking. Since the Senate's passage of the Commerce Justice State Appropriations Bill (HR 2862 – containing NASA's appropriations), conferees continue to negotiate the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bills that include NASA's budget authorization.

Space Foundation participates at the International Astronautical Congress

In mid-Oct., Dr. Patricia Arnold, vice president of Education and Workforce Development, represented the Space Foundation at the 56th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Kitakyushu, Japan, as a presenter at the United Nations/International Astronautical Federation (UN/IAF) Workshop. The theme of the conference was "Space Education and Capacity Building for Sustainable Development." Both NASA and the Japanese space agency JAXA were in attendance as were decision level educators from more than thirty countries.

Dr. Arnold's presentation focused on "Ensuring Future Generations of Global Competitors in Space." Following the presentations, participants broke into working sessions to evaluate the current status of space education in schools world-wide, identify problems and barriers that exist, and formulate recommendations to the United Nations to promote space education awareness and activities which support teachers and students. The recommendations will impact K-12 and higher education students and teachers and contain stratification designed to meet the needs of varying countries. The UN/IAF Workshop and the 56th IAC provide a unique forum for discussions among space experts, policy and decision makers, and representatives from academic community and private industry. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences and to examine opportunities for better cooperation.
