Graduate Summer Institute courses set to begin
The Space Foundation's five Summer Institute courses are scheduled to begin June 19. The courses offered in June are "Astronomy Principles for the Classroom: Kinesthetic Astronomy" and "Space Technologies in the Classroom: Imagery and High-Tech Science." The classes are filling quickly, and record attendance is expected. Teachers can register by calling the Space Foundation at 800-691-4000.
The intensive courses are each one week long, cover a wide range of space topics, and are designed to help teachers use space themes in their classrooms to enable improved student performance in literacy, science, technology, engineering, mathematics and other subject areas. In addition, participating teachers may elect to receive continuing education or graduate academic credit for the courses, and graduate credit may be applied toward one of several master's degrees offered jointly through the Space Foundation and partner universities. July's courses are "Earth Systems Science: Our Earth Revealed," "Rocketry and the Biology of Living in Space: Living Aboard the International Space Station," and "Biological and Physical Research: Long-Term Space Travel."
Nominations accepted for the 2007 Space Technology Hall of Fame
The Space Foundation is currently accepting nominations for its prestigious
Space Technology Hall of Fame program. The Space Foundation, in partnership with NASA, created the Space Technology Hall of Fame in 1988 to honor the innovators who transform space-based technology into commercial products and services that improve life on Earth. Any individual or organization may nominate a technology that originated with the space program and is now used commercially. Nominations will be reviewed for completeness, assessed by technical experts, and ranked by a prestigious panel of judges according to specific criteria. More information and nomination forms can be found online at www.SpaceTechHallofFame.org, and the nomination deadline is July 1, 2006. Technologies and innovators selected for induction in 2007 will be recognized during special awards ceremonies during the
23rd National Space Symposium, scheduled April 9-12, 2007.
Certified Space Technology providing clean drinking water in Iraq
One of the products recognized by the Space Foundation as a Certified Space Technology is being used to provide communities in northern Iraq with safe, clean drinking water. The Space Foundation certified the Water Security Corporation's Discovery system because it uses the same technology originally developed for the United States' manned space program. Water Security Corporation has joined with the humanitarian organization "Concern for Kids" and the United States Army to provide its Discovery water purification system to a number of villages in northern Iraq. Eighth grade students explore career possibilities at the Space Foundation
In support of its mission to advance educational excellence, the Space Foundation on May 4 hosted several eighth grade students from Panorama Middle School in Colorado Springs. The students were paired with the Space Foundation as part of Junior Achievement's Job Shadow Day. The program allows students to interact in a workplace environment and explore career possibilities. Students get the chance to see how the skills learned in school are implemented in the workplace and to learn what it takes to achieve their career goals.
Space Foundation exhibits at Berlin Air Show
The Space Foundation continues its efforts to reach and support the international space industry. On May 16 -21, the Space Foundation exhibited at the ILA Berlin Air Show at the Berlin Schoenefeld Airport, Germany. More than 250,000 visitors attended, including 115,000 trade visitors. The Space Foundation's exhibit, one of 1,014 exhibitors from 42 countries representing every area of the aerospace industry, shared with visitors the Space Foundation's corporate and educational programs integrating civil, commercial, and national security space issues. The Space World Hall that held the Space Foundation's exhibit served as an international forum for dialogue with politicians, agencies, science and research professionals, the media and the general public.
Many high-ranking delegations attended, especially during the three Trade Visitors' Days. In addition to the Federal Minister of Economics Michael Glos, the ILA2006 also received visits from the Defense Minister Franz-Josef Jung, Minister of the Interior Wolfgang Schaeuble, Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, the Minister at the Chancellor's Office Dr. Thomas de Maizière, and the heads of the regional governments in Brandenburg and Berlin, Matthias Platzeck and Klaus Wowereit. Germany's armed forces, the Bundeswehr, were very strongly represented: the Chief of the Armed Forces Wolfgang Schneiderhan attended, as did the Chiefs of Staff of the Air Force and Army, Klaus-Peter Stieglitz and Hans-Otto Budde. In addition, 70 parliamentarians from 17 European countries were welcomed at the ILA2006.
