Red Herrings and Barking Dogs

President & Chief Executive Officer

The "Weaponization" of Space. Sounds pretty damned frightening, doesn't it?

That's the idea behind a low-level, but persistent barking we've heard lately. It emanates from a nervous, vocal minority at home and a few foreign nations who would benefit from a weakened United States.

Report from Washington

An unusually mild and temperate spring has quickly given rise to the normal hot and humid Washington summer. Along with this change in the seasons has been an increased pace of activity on the space policy front. This pace of activity is expected to be maintained at least until fall when the run-up to the elections takes center stage.

Space Foundation provides input at United Nations meeting

In June, the Space Foundation participated in the 49th Meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) in Vienna. The Foundation serves as the industry representative on the U.S. delegation to the Committee. Agenda topics for the meeting included space benefits in society, space applications in disaster prevention and management, space education and the implementation of the recommendations of UNISPACE III. Space Foundation adds education specialists to team

In its ongoing efforts to promote educational excellence, incorporate space into the classroom, and encourage students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the Space Foundation has added two new members its team as education specialists.

Bob Joyce serves as the High School Education Specialist. He is responsible for the development and implementation of a variety of secondary education programs and application strategies including curriculum design, unit and daily lesson plans, technology integration, teaching strategies, presentations, promoting the Space Foundation's Integrated Literacy Science Model, and other cross curriculum collaboration efforts. Prior to this position, Joyce was a high school teacher and served in the United States Air Force for more than 20 years as a terrestrial weather forecaster, solar forecaster, and space environmental analyst.

Bryan DeBates serves as the Elementary Education Specialist. He is responsible for numerous programs and applications in the education department and is actively involved in overseeing the elementary and middle school program design and development, and curriculum design and development. He is involved in a variety of teacher and student workshops through presenting and writing curriculum. Previously, DeBates taught fifth grade for nine years in San Antonio, Texas.

Summer Institute helps teachers put space in the classroom

The Space Foundation's five Summer Institute courses kicked off in June with record attendance. Courses resume July 10 with "Earth Systems Science: Our Earth Revealed," "Rocketry and the Biology of Living in Space: Living Aboard the International Space Station," and "Biological and Physical Research: Long-Term Space Travel." Teachers can register by calling the Space Foundation at 800-691-4000.

The intensive courses are each one week long, cover a wide range of space topics, and are designed to help teachers use space themes in their classrooms to enable improved student performance in literacy, science, technology, engineering, mathematics and other subject areas. Participating teachers may elect to receive continuing education or graduate academic credit for the courses, and graduate credit may be applied toward one of several master's degrees offered jointly through the Space Foundation and partner universities.

Additionally, with attendance from Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons, Teacher Liaison alumni, and prospective Teacher Liaisons, educators have found the courses to be an important place to network with and learn from other teachers incorporating space into the classroom.

Frontier Airlines' in-flight entertainment features space technologies

The Space Foundation and its space awareness programs are featured prominently in a video airing during July and August on Frontier Airlines' Wild Blue Yonder TV. Holland & Hart, a Space Foundation corporate member company, sponsors a monthly segment focusing on businesses which airs throughout the cabin on all Frontier flights. The July "Business Class" feature shines a spotlight on Outlast Technologies and its phase change technology, which is used in clothing for astronauts. Outlast is both an inductee into the Space Technology Hall of Fame and a Certified Space Technology. Watch the video at www.thelightgroup.com/Outlast.mov (12 MB Quicktime movie; this will launch a new window).

Space Foundation brings space to the Farnborough International Airshow

The 45th Farnborough International Airshow (FIA), slated for 17-23 July 2006, in Farnborough, England, is expected to be the biggest, most internationally attended event on the aerospace calendar – a world renowned showcase of aerospace equipment and technology. It provides the perfect venue for the world's civil and military aerospace suppliers and their customers to meet, discuss, finalize and announce new partnerships.

The Space Foundation joins the FIA and the UK Industrial Space Committee, England's leading space industry associations, in presenting the second International Space Pavilion (ISP) in Hall 5, which will reflect the strength and growth of the global space industry with exhibits and an exclusive seminar program with interactive features. The ISP will provide an excellent business forum for companies and organizations representing civil, commercial, and national security space issues and those with an interest in the space industry. Offering more than 1,100 square meters of exhibit space dedicated to the products, projects, and professionals in the space industry, exhibits will feature recent developments in space technology that are delivering cost effective solutions in areas such as defense, transport planning, land aid and pollution control, and international space exploration promoting innovation and human knowledge, inspiring the scientists and engineers of the future. The ISP is designed to reflect this dynamic and fast moving market place.

The Space Foundation is working closely with NASA to coordinate the agency's presence at this international event.
