Report from Washington

Both the House and the Senate made significant progress on NASA's budget in June, with the Senate completing committee action on the FY06 Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bill, and the House passing the counterpart FY06 Science, State, Justice and Commerce appropriations bill on the House floor.

Space Foundation joins U.S. delegation at COPUOS

The Space Foundation recently participated in the 48 th Session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), joining the U.S. delegation as an industry representative at the meetings of the full committee in Vienna. Among agenda items addressed in sessions and presentations were space applications, spinoff benefits of space technology, space education, disaster mitigation, space in tsunami relief and prevention, implementation of UNISPACE III, and reports of the Scientific and Technical, and Legal Subcommittees.

Space Foundation makes key personnel changes

The Space Foundation has established a new Research & Analysis enterprise, operating from its Washington, D.C., offices. Former top Pentagon spokesperson Col James "Jay" DeFrank, Ph.D., USAF (Retired) will assume the position of executive director, Research & Analysis, effective July 18, leading the new effort.

Rosalind Clark joins our Florida office as a communications associate for the Space Foundation's Florida Operations and its Coalition for Space Exploration activities.

In internal realignments, Kevin C. Cook has been named to the new position of director, Brand Management. Cook will continue to supervise the Space Technology Hall of Fame and Certified Space Technology programs. Kendra Horn has been promoted to manager, Government Affairs; Stephanie Fibbs has been promoted to manager, Communications & Media Relations; and Andrea Glassett has been promoted to manager, Human Resources and Team Services.

Summer Institute Classes Launch Learning Excitement™

Teachers from such diverse locations as Alaska, Hawaii, Connecticut, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, California, and Nebraska have successfully completed the first two of five Summer Institute courses held each summer in Colorado Springs. The Space Foundation education team leads the teachers through intensive, weeklong, graduate-level immersion programs that include weightlessness training, rocketry, remote sensing and much more. Upcoming courses are Rocketry and the Biology of Living in Space, Space History and Space Law (July 11-15); Biological and Physical Research: Exploring Nano-Science Technologies (July 18-22); and Astronomy Principles for the Classroom: Astrobiology (July 25-29). Each course can be applied toward continuing education credit, graduate credit, or a master's degree with an emphasis in space studies.

Cartwright, Lord to participate at Strategic Space 2005

Key speakers and sponsors have already confirmed their participation in Strategic Space 2005. Gen James E. Cartwright, USMC, Commander, United States Strategic Command, and Gen Lance W. Lord, USAF, Commander, Air Force Space Command, will be featured speakers at Strategic Space 2005. Addressing the full spectrum of the Command’s mission, with particular attention to the space-enabled support of operational commands, this year's event features an expanded program. Key sponsors of Strategic Space 2005 are the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and Lockheed Martin, co-sponsors of the Opening Ceremony and Reception; The Boeing Company, co-sponsor of the Wednesday Keynote Luncheon; and Northrop Grumman, co-sponsor of the Strategic Space Dinner on 6 October. In response to the sold-out exhibit space last year, an all-new, larger exhibit center for Strategic Space 2005 will feature 15,000 sq. feet of the latest in technologies, systems, and solutions supporting the Command. Nearly 10,000 sq. feet has already been sold.
