Space entrepreneurs finally may be nearing their goals

I grew up as a "rocket boy" in a small Kentucky town in the 1950s. While launching backyard missiles and conducting explosive experiments in the basement, I devoured science fiction and wondered if personal space travel would ever be possible. And if so, what would it be like? Now, 50 years later, after several careers in space and technology, I believe those dreams are within reach.

Report from Washington

With the start of a new year, the new 110th Congress convenes this month and will begin what is expected to be an active legislative session for 2007. The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives and Senate will have all new chairmen and women in each committee and subcommittee. The committees with jurisdiction over civil space and national security space are expected to commence with robust oversight hearings on a wide variety of issues. In a town that can be ferociously partisan, space policy has been one of the few policy areas that continually receives bipartisan support. Though there could be varying degrees of scrutiny on specific programs, several strong Democrat and Republican lawmakers remain who will champion our nation's space investment and activities.

Space Technology Hall of Fame featured in Hayden Planetarium discussion

Each month, the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History hosts a discussion of space news making headlines called "This Just In…" Planetarium Director Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson leads the discussion and provides background information and analysis from the scientists behind the discoveries and news. One of the topics covered at December's event was space spinoffs and the perceived value of the space program. Dr. Tyson's featured guest was the Space Foundation's Director of Communications, who shared with the audience about the Space Technology Hall of Fame and some of the more than 50 products that have been inducted since 1988.

Space Foundation plans fifth annual Space Career Fair

Whether you are a college student or transitioning military, discover how to further your career by attending the premier gathering of aerospace professionals at the annual Space Career Fair April 12, 2007, during the 23rd National Space Symposium at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Job seekers can combine their education, talents and experience with an interest in space and learn more about employment opportunities in the space industry. Admission to the Space Career Fair includes "Meet the Company" presentations with space industry representatives to discuss career opportunities and industry trends and needs; a networking lunch (for the first 300 registrants); interview opportunities with leading space companies; and access to the Ball Aerospace Exhibit Center at the 23rd National Space Symposium. Nominate someone making a difference in education for the Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award

Do you know K-12 teachers or district-level administrators who are making a difference in education through the use of technology? Recognize their achievements by nominating them for the Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award. The Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF), in partnership with the Space Foundation and NASA, will recognize the accomplishments of one outstanding individual and his or her contributions to lifelong learning through the application of technology in the classroom or professional development of teachers.

Technology personnel and K-12 classroom teachers who have demonstrated exemplary use of technology to enhance learning are eligible for this award. School principals, superintendents or associate superintendents may nominate eligible candidates. The AMF, the Space Foundation, and NASA will present the award April 9, 2007, at the 23rd National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2007. Teacher Liaisons

The Space Foundation is accepting applications for its prestigious Teacher Liaison program. Teacher Liaison applications are due to the Space Foundation by Feb. 2, 2007. Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons serve as an active link between the Space Foundation, NASA, and their school and school district. All kindergarten through 12th grade educators, or other professionals or informal educators who have a desire to integrate space education into their classrooms are eligible to apply. Applications and more information are available to online at www.SpaceFoundation.org/education or by contacting the Space Foundation at (800) 691-4000. Selected teachers will be notified in February.
