The Event that Saved 1968

President & Chief Executive Officer

America's space programs face many challenges in 2006. The toughest battles will almost certainly be fought over funding. The question will be asked: in a world in turmoil, with a war on terror, amidst rebuilding our hurricane-stricken southeastern shores – how can we afford our space programs?

The answer is, that it is precisely in such times that we need our space programs the most.

Report from Washington

In December, the Washington office held a national security space senior executive working group meeting to help provide Under Secretary of the Air Force, The Honorable Dr. Ronald Sega, a blueprint for implementing recommendations for improving space acquisition, work force, and industrial base issues. Top priorities for the blueprint were identified and these are being refined and will be distributed to the participants pending the next meeting. The goal is to provide the recommendations to the Under Secretary in the form of a white paper early
in 2006.

Headquarters Report

Become a Space Foundation Teacher Liaison

The Space Foundation is currently accepting applications for its Teacher Liaison program. Any K-12 grade educator or other professional who desires to integrate space education into the classroom and curriculum is eligible to apply. Applications and more information about the benefits of participating in this prestigious program can be found online and are due Feb. 24, 2006. Teacher Liaisons help inspire the next generation of students to excel in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

This is the third year of the Teacher Liaison program, which provides those chosen with support for teachers to expand their teaching skills, strengthen their resumes, and influence space and science education at a national level. Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons serve as an active link between the Space Foundation, NASA, and their schools and school districts. Teacher Liaisons will be announced in March and inducted in April at the 22nd National Space Symposium, to which they receive complimentary registration.

Certified Products news

The Space Certification program welcomes two new members: KACO Solar, Incorporated, and Unique Logic and Technology.

The Blue Planet Grid-Tie Inverter, a solar electric system from KACO Solar which provides the benefits of solar energy to those on Earth, is recognized as a Certified Space Technology. Solar panels capture the energy of the sun and generate DC electricity, which the inverter converts to AC power used in the home. Photovoltaic cells have been intimately tied to our space program from the early days and continue to be used widely to power the growing population of satellites that provide everything from secure communications and GPS navigation to satellite television and radio entertainment.

KACO Solar is committed to design devices and systems that yield maximum outputs from solar energy, so as to preserve our planet as a natural environment for the generations to come. Learn more at http://www.kacosolar.com.

Unique Logic and Technology is recognized as a Certified Educational Product for its "Play Attention" Bio-Feedback based educational attention training system. The Play Attention Learning System is a patented advance of technology that NASA astronauts and U.S. Air Force pilots use to help stay attentive in the cockpit. Now this same technology is available for use in your home to overcome attention, concentration and focus issues.

The system uses a sensor-lined helmet resembling a bicycle helmet that monitors the user's attentive state and thinking process. This is fed into a small interface system that attaches to the user's home computer. Users complete a series of video game-like exercises that are controlled by the mind alone, seeing and hearing real-time feedback of how they are progressing in focusing and finishing tasks. The feedback is called Edufeedback. With practice, behavior is modified to minimize distractions and improve focus, comprehension and other desirable learning behavior.
