Report From Washington

Brian E. Chase
Vice President, Washington Operations

The National Space and Satellite Alliance -- formed to better coordinate the Washington activities of some of the leading space organizations and trade groups -- kicked off its first event last week with a roundtable breakfast featuring Steve Schmidt, Executive Director of the President's Commission on Moon, Mars and Beyond. Steve spoke to the group about the structure of the Commission, its work to date, and the progress they hope to make before their report is issued in June this year. The President chartered the Commission to provide recommendations on implementing the new Vision for Space Exploration and was given a 120-day window to complete that task.

The National Space and Satellite Alliance (NSSA) will continue to host periodic, informal gatherings of space leaders to provide behind-the-scenes updates on key developments in the civil, commercial, and national security space community. The Alliance will also occasionally provide positions papers to policymakers on issues of common concern to NSSA members.

In Capitol Hill news, the Senate delegations from Texas, Alabama, and Florida last week successfully restored full funding for NASA in the Senate version of the FY2005 Budget Resolution, which originally recommended funding reductions for the agency. The bipartisan effort restored $600 million to bring the budget in line with NASA's funding request.

The Coalition for Space Exploration, of which the Space Foundation is a major partner, continues to provide accurate and timely information to Members of Congress and their staff as they consider spending priorities for FY2005.

Space Foundation Seeks Contributions as Production Begins on The Journey of the Tiny Torah

Elizabeth Wagner
Vice President, Strategic Partnership
Development & Corporate Sales

The Space Foundation has formed a relationship with West Street Productions to help fund the production of a documentary about the long journey of a tiny Torah scroll into Space. The story received global attention on Jan. 21, 2003, when Israeli astronaut Col. Ilan Ramon held the scroll before the camera during a live feed from the Space Shuttle Columbia. When the shuttle disintegrated 11 days later, the scroll, along with the six astronauts, disintegrated upon re-entering the atmosphere.

The Torah scroll had belonged to Dr. Joachim Joseph, or “Yoya” as his friends know him. Yoya headed the Israeli science team working with Ramon during the mission. Yoya was also a Holocaust survivor who had celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in secret at the camp Bergen-Belsen. A Rabbi gave Yoya the small scroll as his Bar Mitzvah gift with the condition that he promise to use the scroll to tell the story of what happened at the camp.

“This is a powerful story, and Ramon knew he was taking on a tremendous responsibility when he became Israel’s first astronaut,” said executive producer Dan Cohen of West Street Productions. “He knew he had to make a statement to the world that Israel was now part of an elite space exploring club. He used the Torah scroll from the Holocaust to show the world – as he put it – ‘what a Jew can do when you go from the depths of hell to the heights of space.’”
Filming got underway this week as Cohen, Associate Producer Courtney Stadd, and a film crew accompanied the families of the Columbia crew this past week on a tour of Israel.

The documentary traces the trail of the tiny Torah scroll and the lives it touched as it traveled from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in World War II, to the hands of Israel’s first astronaut Col. Ilan Ramon, who took the scroll with him aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle. Interviews were conducted with Yoya, two of the surviving daughters of the Rabbi, and a former commander and close friend of Ramon. Former Israeli Prime Minister Simon Peres, who signed the agreement with the United States to send an Israeli into space, also provided commentary for the film.

Maryland Public Television has offered to become the sponsoring station for the program on PBS. The documentary is being filmed in High Definition Television. For more information about film content, contact Dan Cohen at 301.681.0840 or by e-mail at dancohen@erols.com or to send a contribution, contact Elizabeth Eisenstat-Wagner at 800-691-4000 or by e-mail at elizabeth@spacefoundation.org.

Due to tremendous support by the Israeli Space Agency, NASA, and the family and friends of Ilan Ramon, interest in the project and contributions have increased tremendously since filming began in Israel.

SF exhibit at Farnborough to showcase corporate member kiosks highlighting space business

Acknowledging the growing importance of space programs and systems to civil, commercial and military capabilities on the air, land and sea, the Society of
British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), organizers of Farnborough International 2004, set for July 19-25, have announced the creation of the first International
Space Pavilion (ISP). The SBAC and UKISC (United Kingdom Industrial Space Committee) have teamed with the Space Foundation (Colorado Springs) and
Kallman Worldwide, Inc. (New Jersey) to present the space-themed pavilion where 290,000 expected attendees can quickly and easily access information
and decision makers from the companies, agencies and organizations driving today’s space systems and tomorrow’s space capabilities. Space Foundation Corporate Member companies are being asked to purchase a turn-key kiosk space for $3250 to have a presence there but avoid costly shipping rates and travel. NASA Administrator, the Honorable Sean O'Keefe, will be attending the show and holding meetings in the ISP pavilion located in Hall 5.

Jackie Illonardo of Kallman and Elizabeth Wagner of the Foundation will be available during the 20th National Space Symposium to answer any questions.

Policy and Public Affairs

Steve Eisenhart
Senior Vice President,
Policy & Public Affairs

The Space Foundation is pleased to announce another “first” for the National Space Symposium, as the first official Congressional Staff Delegation (STAFDEL) will participate in next week’s Symposium in Colorado Springs. Sponsored by the Air Force in support of the Space Power Caucus, the STAFDEL will visit Colorado Springs-area military space facilities, attend opening night activities, view sessions and visit the Northrop Grumman Exhibit Hall at the symposium, and attend the Corporate Partner Dinner on Tuesday evening. Maj Gen Michael A. Hamel, USAF, Commander, 14th Air Force, Air Force Space Command and Commander, Space Air Forces, United States Strategic Command will be the featured speaker at a special by invitation Tuesday luncheon, co-sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) and the Space Foundation.

The Space Foundation is proud to support the Space Power Caucus in conjunction with NDIA and is pleased to welcome the Congressional staff to the 20th National Space Symposium.

The Congressional staff will not be the only ones new to the Symposium, as the Foundation is honored to have forty-four “first time” speakers at the National Space Symposium among the space policy leaders and executives participating in next week’s program.

First Class of Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons Inducted

Patricia Arnold, Ph.D.
Vice President, Education & Workforce Development

On March 30, 2004, during the Opening Ceremony of the 20th National Space Symposium, the Space Foundation’s first class of 30 selected Teacher Liaisons will be introduced and recognized. These teachers are the superior educators and were selected in a highly competitive process which included written support from their supervisors. Representing states from across the country, these are highly dedicated teachers who take on additional responsibilities in order to expand their own knowledge base and to elevate their students’ learning in space and science.

Teacher Liaisons are an active link between the Space Foundation, NASA, and their school and school district. Teacher Liaisons have a number of Space Foundation privileges, such as attending the National Space Symposium. They receive national recognition as an advocate in promoting and improving space and science. These teachers are given the opportunity to participate in specialized training and instruction at the Space Foundation and NASA workshops and acquire cutting-edge space science materials, standards based lesson plans, and NASA activities manuals.

The Space Foundation provides unique professional development experiences in science, technology, engineering, and math for the Teacher Liaisons, including exclusive mission simulation activity at the Challenger Learning Center.

At the 20th National Space Symposium, Teacher Liaisons will be presented with a special “flight jacket”. This jacket is unique to this program and ONLY worn by the Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons who earn participation levels, signified on their jackets and have access to a variety of products and reduced cost of events, graduate classes, and student activities. Responsibilities of Teacher Liaisons are to support and implement space science activities and materials into their teaching curriculum, to organize teacher groups to visit the Space Foundation and tour the NASA Education Resource Center, and to participate in Space Foundation education programs. Teacher Liaisons serve as a focal point in their school for “Space Day” activities.

The Greatest Industry On –
Or Off – Earth

will soon be coming
together again.

Construction is complete on the Northrop Grumman Exhibit Center, and 18- wheelers laden with the latest in high-tech trade show displays begin arriving at The Broadmoor tomorrow. Space Foundation offices transition to The Broadmoor Friday night. Our team, volunteers, and customers begin arriving over the weekend – and on Monday, March 29th the 20th Anniversary National Space Symposium will be “go for launch!”

Over the years, our customers have made the National Space Symposium the premier annual gathering of the space industry anywhere on Earth. The extraordinary roster of the most senior-level speakers, the astonishing displays of the newest space systems and technologies, the attendance by industry and government leadership, peak events like the Space Technology Hall of Fame dinner – all work together to make The Broadmoor the center of the space industry universe for one week each spring. The Space Foundation is honored to be the steward of this remarkable industry gathering, and our team is geared up to ensure all 5,000+ people who cross the threshold of the Symposium next week enjoy the best tradeshow and conference in the galaxy!

If there is one thing that the National Space Symposium highlights, it is the fact that ours must surely be the greatest industry on – or off – the planet Earth.

Starting with the Opening Ceremony, where the presentation of the Jack Swigert Award for Space Exploration will pay tribute to the Mars Exploration Rovers team, and right through to the Space Technology Hall of Fame dinner, which honors the life-saving and life-altering innovations that have come from space, the Symposium is a supreme showcase for how the exploration, development, and use of space has benefited all of humanity. The companies and commands that use space to defend freedom, the companies and agencies that have changed the global face of satellite services, the scientists and explorers who are taking us boldly where no one has ever gone before – all will be at the National Space Symposium. To paraphrase (badly) Pogo: “We have met the heroes, and they are us.”

To be sure, the Symposium is only one part of the year-round mission of the Space Foundation. We are equally proud of our education and work force programs, our work in space policy at both the national and international levels, our leading role in space advocacy, our Strategic Space and Space at the Crossroads conferences, our support of the STK Users’ Conference, and especially the role we play through outreach and certification programs in connecting society at large with their civil, commercial, and national security space programs.

But we recognize that the National Space Symposium is yet our crown jewel. We know that every facet on this gem has been cut and polished in close collaboration with our customers in government, industry, and academia.

For its Platinum Anniversary, we’ve polished the 20th National Space Symposium to its highest luster. Whether this is your first Symposium or your twentieth, we look forward to seeing you there!

Elliot G. Pulham
President &
Chief Executive Officer
